What Will I See at a 10 Week Pregnancy Scan?

At a 10 week pregnancy scan we would expect to see a tiny baby (approximately 32mm) and a clear view of baby’s heart beating. When having a 10 week early pregnancy scan, the baby should now be big enough for the scan to be carried out abdominally.
Should your sonographer feel necessary they may still offer you a trans-vaginal scan if they need to get a clearer view.
If you have any queries or concerns about a trans-vaginal scan you can read our FAQs relating to Trans-vaginal scanning here or contact your local firstScan clinic.

Iona Harries our firstScan midwife explains here what you should see at a 10 week pregnancy scan.

What’s Happening at 9 Weeks?

About Your Baby

Baby is now around 32mm which is roughly the size if a small apricot. Baby’s face is starting to form now meaning their eyes can react to light and their ears, mouth and nose are starting to form. Fun fact at this point baby’s heart is beating at 180bpm which is three times faster than Mums!

About You

By now you might be starting to feel a little bloated around the middle and your jeans will be feeling a little snug. This may be causing you to suffer with some digestive problems and excess wind. This is purely due to the muscles in your womb expanding with the growing baby so don’t panic!

What You Need to do

Keep rested and hydrated your baby is changing all the time so you just have to let it happen. If you have just found out this week you need to book an appointment to see your GP and ask to see your midwife. You will usually be offered a scan at 8-14 weeks with the NHS but if you just can’t wait to see baby then you can book your early pregnancy scan from today.
