What Will I See at a 7 Week Pregnancy Scan?

At a 7 week pregnancy scan we would expect to see a tiny baby (approximately 8mm) and the first flicker of baby’s heart beating. When having a 7 week early pregnancy scan, it is medically recommended that the scan is carried out trans-vaginally.
Trans-vaginal scans offer much more clear and accurate results pre 10 weeks gestation. With clearer view of baby, we can offer you more accurate diagnostic results and provider greater reassurance.
Should you have any queries or concerns about a trans-vaginal scan you can read our FAQs relating to Trans-vaginal scanning here or contact your local firstScan clinic.

What’s Happening at 7 Weeks?

About Your Baby

Baby is now measuring around 8mm and has now grown to the size of a grape! At this stage baby’s brain is growing quicker than the rest of the body so on a scan the head will appear huge compared to the rest of the body. Little limb buds are also starting to form cartilage which will soon start to develop into baby’s arms and legs.

About You

You won’t be showing signs of a baby bump just yet, but your body is busy creating your little bundle of joy. You may notice you are feeling thirstier than usual, this is due to the extra blood flowing around your body feeding your womb with all the nutrients needed for baby. Make sure you are staying well hydrated with plenty of water, milk and juices.

What You Need to do

Book an appointment with your GP and ask to see a midwife. Alternatively, you can self-refer to your local hospital. You will usually be offered a scan at 8-14 weeks dating scan with the NHS but if you just can’t wait to see baby then you can take at look at our early pregnancy scan packages to find the most suitable package for you and book your early pregnancy scan today.
