What Will I See at a 8 Week Pregnancy Scan?

At an 8 week pregnancy scan we would expect to see a tiny baby (approximately 16 mm) and the flicker of baby’s heart beating. When having a 8 week early pregnancy scan, it is medically recommended that the scan is carried out trans-vaginally.
Trans-vaginal scans offer much more clear and accurate results pre 10 weeks gestation. With clearer view of baby, we can offer you more accurate diagnostic results and provider greater reassurance.
Should you have any queries or concerns about a trans-vaginal scan you can read our FAQs relating to Trans-vaginal scanning here or contact your local firstScan clinic.

What’s Happening at 8 Weeks?

About Your Baby

Baby is now around measuring 16mm, approximately the size of a raspberry. At this point baby’s arms are starting to get longer and will currently be longer than baby’s legs as the upper part of the body grows quicker.

About You

There’s lots going on inside you now as baby is getting bigger and starting to look more like a little human. Your placenta will be getting ready to take over providing baby with all the goodness they need to grow. The placenta is starting to sprout what is described as little branches so it can attach itself to your womb.

What You Need to do

You need to make sure you are taking it easy and getting plenty of rest. If you have haven’t already done so, you need to book an appointment with your GP and ask to see a midwife. Alternatively, you can self-refer to your local hospital. You will usually be offered a scan at 8-14 weeks dating scan with the NHS. However, if you just can’t wait to see baby then you can take at look at our early pregnancy scan packages to find the most suitable package for you and book your early pregnancy scan today.
